Healthy Alternative To Candy

2 Healthy Alternatives to Candy You Should Try This Summer

I remember summertime being filled with sugar, candy, ice cream and many more “sweet treats,” as a kid. My brother’s, cousin’s, and I played outdoors most of the afternoon while eating our candy. We bought it with our pocket change that we had collected.

Candy stores were in walking distance, all around my neighborhood. Many times, we only came into the house to go to the bathroom and to get water. Thankfully, we were very active (running around and playing) burning off all of that energy.

Why it is important to replace candy in your diet?

Candy is not real food. It can be loaded with sugar (high fructose corn syrup), those horrible artery clogging trans-fats, artificial flavors (addictive), and food colors (linked to ADHD, eczema, cavities, neurological disorders and more).

In case you are not convinced yet….Candy has no nutritional value. For many of us, it has been associated with happy times and childhood memories. It is often given to children, as a reward for good behavior. However, when we know better…we begin to do better and pass that lifestyle on to our children.

Unfortunately, candy is not good for us and it should not be a part of our regular diets. That’s why…. I would like to share with you shortly two healthy alternatives to candy that you should try this summer!

Many studies have proven that absolute deprivation and denial does not work for many people. Especially when someone is really addicted to a certain food. Sugar can be very addictive, so I wanted to share with you some beneficial alternatives to candy that my kids have enjoyed over the years.

Both of these fruits are naturally sweet and nutritiously balanced, so they really don’t have a problem with eating them, in moderation.

2 Natural Healthy Alternatives to Candy

Figs and dates were mentioned in the bible many times. It’s safe to say that they are ancient foods that were highly regarded. They were also given to Greek athletes (gladiators) to help them build muscle and provide energy. Because these fruits are very satisfying…it is very unnecessary for me to buy candy for my kids. Figs and dates are sweet, chewy, and gooey.

Figs

Figs are healthy alternative to candy

Fresh Figs are highly perishable, therefore the focus of my post is on dried figs, which are actually said to be higher in nutritional value. Figs are complete nutritional food sources. They are rich in natural sugar, it also has calcium, fiber and antioxidants too.

I have always noticed that sugar, in nature always contain fiber, vitamins and minerals and some water content. Fiber slows down the blood sugar from quickly spiking.

Figs are nutritiously balanced with just the right amounts of magnesium, manganese, calcium, copper, potassium, vitamin K, and vitamin B6. Together, these compounds have the capacity to regulate blood sugar levels, inhibit kidney and liver problems and cancer (specifically postmenopausal breast cancer), prevent macular degeneration and high blood pressure, aid in weight loss, and protect the heart.

Precaution: Do not consume too many figs over the course of a day, because it can have a laxative affect. Stick to the serving size and if you experience loose stools, back off a little.

Figs come in different varieties. However, these mission figs pictured below are my favorite dried figs, because they are organic and unsulphured.

Dates

Dates are a healthy alternative to candy

Dates remind me of buttery caramel. They come from the palm date tree and are rich in potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, selenium, B vitamins, fiber and so much more. Scientific studies have shown that eating them in moderation can help support blood pressure, healthy cells, increased circulation and blood supply.

Dates have many similar benefits as figs. Dates are a healthy alternatives to candy and come in different varieties. You can also purchase them with or without pits.

These are the dates pictured below that we use the most in our household, because they are organic, pitted, and simple for snacking on.

How Do I Add Figs and Dates into Your Diet?

I chop them up to sweeten granola, oatmeal, or cereal, and smoothies; instead of other sugars and sweeteners. At home, we add them to our own trail mixes of nuts and seeds.

My kids also eat one or two in between meals to boost their energy and brain power while doing their school work. Sometimes, I will eat a fig or a date before my workout to power up my performance, energy, and stamina.

There You Have It!

Sweet can be good for you too! I love being able to let my kids enjoy childhood treats that are a REAL TREAT! I would still caution you not to overindulge, but these treats are so packed with nutrition and goodness that you will be able to stop after just one or two.

Foods To Avoid When Tired 7 Mar

Foods To Avoid When Tired

Foods To Avoid

Foods To Avoid When Tired

Throughout life we may experience different seasons where we may get less than ideal sleep. Studies have shown that a lack of sleep can lead to heart disease, diabetes and obesity, thyroid dysfunction, adrenal fatigue, brain fog and other illnesses.

Therefore, trying to survive off of less than 7-8 hours of sleep a night is obviously not the goal of this blog post.

In this post I will share with you helpful tips of foods to avoid when you are tired.

Tips so you can maintain proper immune function, brain power, energy levels, and reduce the chances of you getting illnesses associated with less sleep.

Maybe you are going through one of these situations right now…

New baby or caretaker– Around the clock feedings, diapering, and nurturing.

College student– Pulling late night study sessions.

Swing Shift Worker– Rotating working days, evenings and midnights.

Midnight Worker– Working overnight.

Trouble Sleeping– Some people may have trouble falling and staying asleep. Tip: Try Magnesium!

Starting or running a business.

I have experienced each and every one of these situations above. Sometimes at the same time.

If you have experienced any of these disruptions to your normal sleep routine…here are some helpful tips to keep you from losing your health and mind in the process.

DON’T EAT JUNK FOOD: I like to put junk food (AKA Fake Food, AKA Food Imposters AKA Franken Foods) fast food, frozen meals, and many other prepackaged foods into this “Junk Food” category.

Foods To Avoid

I understand! When your energy is low, it is easy to follow the path of least resistance. I use to be at that place in my life too.

Now, I am determined to eat even healthier when I get less sleep, because I know the risks involved to my health and mind are too great.

Processed foods maybe easy and convenient, because you don’t have to really do much cooking or preparation, which saves time, but it is not worth it in the long run.

Junk food is often full of refined salt, additives, fillers, genetically modified organisms (GMO’s), poor quality/pro inflammatory cooking oils and Trans fats.

Tip: Nourishing your body with nutrients from fruits, vegetables, high quality protein sources, eating healthy fats, and staying hydrated with pure water can help build your immune system.

This can protect you from getting sick, since your immune system can become compromised, if you are not getting enough sleep.

LIMIT OR AVOID ADDED SUGAR: Sugar can lead to a quick rise in energy, but then you often experience a crash and cravings for your next rush (hit).

Foods To Avoid

Studies have shown that sugar can be as addictive as cocaine. Sugar can weaken your immune system for up to 6 hours, after consuming it.

Additionally, sugar has been related to causing heart disease, inflammation, cancer, yeast overgrowth, diabetes, obesity, tooth decay and more.

Tip: Keep fresh and frozen fruit on hand, if you want something sweet or want to grab something quick.

Foods To Avoid

Eat whole fruit instead of drinking fruit juice, because it does not have fiber and will cause a spike in your blood sugar. Figs and dates were used by the Roman gladiators for energy and strength building.

Of course, you would still eat fruit in moderation because of the sugar content.

CUT OUT SIMPLE CARBS: Some foods may not taste sweet such as; crackers, white rice and flour, but don’t be fooled. Simple carbohydrates spike your blood sugar quickly, increasing your insulin levels in your blood and can lead to water retention (bloating), fatigue, decreased nutrient absorption, gluten intolerance and leaky gut.

Tip: Snack on nuts, seeds, and other foods with healthy fat like avocados.

Foods To Avoid

DON’T ABUSE CAFFINE: There is much debate about rather coffee is good for you or not. Most studies suggest that it is safe to have a few small cups of coffee.

However, you will want to avoid the sugary coffee drinks offered at many restaurants and shops. Coffee in moderation can help you be more sharp, focused, and alert.

On the other hand, if you abuse coffee, it can lead to health related problems.

Tip: Drink more water before and after drinking coffee to avoid dehydration, which can lead to fatigue and headaches.

Foods To Avoid

Take Home Message…

We don’t want to make getting less sleep a goal or habit, but we know with life circumstances, it can happen to us all at some point in life.

Hopefully, it is just a season in your life and not a permanent lifestyle. Eating nutritionally can help us maintain our energy levels, build our immune systems, and protect us from experiencing a decline in our health and mind.

Join the Conversation….

Have you ever experienced a time in your life when you just were not able to maintain a consistent sleep schedule? Why?

Detox Holistically With Natural Remedies 28 Feb

How To Safely Detox Your Body

Natural Detox

How To Safely Detox Your Body

A detox, if used irresponsibly, can be very dangerous and so it is crucial for your health that you are sensible and careful before starting a detox program.

Always opt for detoxes that are food-based and do not need drastic measures such as living on liquids only also do not detox the body for more than 10 days as the body needs a greater variety of nutrients than those provided by a detox program.

Heres my personal reccomendation for a detox solution  ( Amazon Affiliate Link )

Fibrous vegetables and fruits

These are very effective for detoxing the body because the fiber cleans out your digestive system and slows down your appetite immensely. Meaning you can break from high-calorie foods and allow the digestive system recovery time to return to better function.

Detoxing vegetables to try are artichokes, cauliflowers, radishes, watercress, bok choy, asparagus, kale, spinach and broccoli. Fruits include berries, guava, watermelon, tomato and avocado.

Spices and herbs

Herbs can be steeped in water to make teas and in order to enhance the effects of your detox add spices to your cooking. Fennel reduces heartburn, gas and bloating while ginger is an efficient anti-inflammatory agent.

Ginseng helps in boosting immunity and helping the body get over stress; mint soothes the digestive system while nutmeg helps in returning bowel activity to normal. Turmeric boosts immunity and cleanses the liver.

Detox Herbs & Spices To Promote Health

Fermented foods

These are beneficial to the digestive process, immunity and gut health and including them in your detox allows for elimination of damaging bacteria and a positive balance of healthy gut flora.

They improve nutrient uptake from other detox foods and enhance the digestion of foods that the digestive system may struggle with such as high-fiber foods.

Examples of fermented foods to include are kombucha, kefir, miso, pickled vegetables, sauerkraut and kimchi.

Increased water intake

When detoxing, this factor is essential because water can be used to detoxify the body at any time. Increased hydration means that fewer toxins will be in circulation in the body.

Water reduces hunger, filters environmental toxins from the bloodstream and eliminates metabolic waste. It boosts metabolism, immunity, bowel function and digestion.

Your daily water intake should be 8 glasses or more even when you aren’t thirsty. Water and herbal tea are most effective in flushing out the system when detoxing and should be the only liquids you’re taking.

Nutrients required

Greens you take during your detox in the form of green salads or smoothies are good for intake of magnesium, potassium, calcium, amino acids, B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, beta-carotene and chlorophyll.

Protein is also needed during detoxes to improve sleep, reduce jitteriness and mood swings, stabilize blood sugar spikes to help with high-stress levels and promote the proper production of hormones.

7 Benefits Of Pink Himalayan Salt 23 Feb

Benefits Of Pink Himalayan Salt

7 Benefits Of Pink Himalayan Salt

7 Benefits Of Pink Himalayan Salt

Like some of you, I began making strides towards a healthier holistic lifestyle. It has been a ten year journey for me. I started to pay more attention to my options on the grocery store shelves, after I became a mom.

After finding the benefits of pink Himalayan salt and with curiosity from all of the health information I had been reading, I began asking questions like…. why should I choose this product over that one?

Why does this product cost more than that one, etc.?

I wondered, do I just stay in my comfort zone and buy what my mother and grandmother bought?

As it relates to salt, I decided to do more research into the matter, especially since it surrounds so much controversy with recommendations to reduce salt intake, due to health related conditions, such as high blood pressure, stroke, and diabetes.

Based on government standards, many doctors recommend their patients “limit their intake of salt to 2,300 milligrams, less than 1,500 mg if you’re African American or 51 and older, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.”

Actually, much of the sodium many people consume daily comes from processed, packaged, and/or fast food. It is often believed that salt is causing the epidemic rates of heart disease and health related issues, or could it be the wrong kind of salt their patients are using?

Table salt is not beneficial and can be harmful. It is cooked to a very high temperature, destroying its natural minerals. Table salt can build up in the organs and tissues, as a toxic substance?

On the other hand Pure Himalayan Salt, also called “Pink Salt” is referred to as, “the purest salt in the world” and comes from the heart of the Himalayan Mountains; where it has been covered and protected from contaminating pollutants.

It contains natural hues of pink, red, and white, which is indicative of its rich mineral content.

Here Are Seven benefits of pink Himalayan salt

1. Varying Mineral Content

Pink sea salt’s minerals are in a natural well balanced state that your body can easily utilize. Pink sea salt has calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium in it.

Without the right balance of minerals… your body would begin to rob the minerals needed for the body’s functions from your bones and that could lead to osteoporosis and other health related problems.

Note: Pink sea salt can be sprinkled in distilled or reverse osmosis water to add necessary minerals back that were removed in the purifying process.

benefits of pink Himalayan salt

2. Reducing Mucous

Colds and many other illnesses in the body utilize mucous as nature’s band- aid for weak tissues or organ, after it has been exposed to toxins from the environment, synthetic substances, or junk food.

Sea salt naturally dries up the mucous and protects the organ from further weakness or damage. I can’t tell you how many times gargling warm salt water has relieved me from a cold or sore throat.

3. Detoxification

Here’s my personal recommendation for Pink Salt ( Amazon Affiliate Link )

Adding 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt dissolved in warm water upon waking flushes out your system and clears up any excessive phlegm (mucous) and waste from the body. Unlike table salt…the benefits of pink Himalayan salt do not cause bloating.

4. Less Sodium

You will typically use less pink salt than table salt, because it is not processed into fine grounds like table salt, so a little sprinkle on your food goes a longer way.

5. Soothing Pain Relief

Because of its high mineral content, pink sea salt can be added to a foot or bath to soak tired achy muscles. It is very relaxing.

Benefits Of Pink Himalayan Salt

6. Tenderize Meat

Instead of using chemically laced meat tenderizers to tenderize your meat…soak it in a salt water brine for 12-48 hours for fork tender succulent meat.

7. Air Purifier

Pink sea salt is antimicrobial and there is a rise of people using Pure Himalayan Pink Salt lamps to reduce allergens in the air.

Here’s my personal recommendation for a salt lamp that works ( Amazon Affiliate Link )

7 Benefits Of Pink Himalayan Salt

The major benefit of Himalayan Pink Sea Salt is… its rich mineral content, therefore you don’t have to worry about getting your necessary iodine that is added to table salt. Pink Salt is easily eliminated from the body and does not retain water like table salt.

Table salt can cause an unsafe rise in blood pressure and contribute to heart disease. Significantly, reduce the amount of processed and precooked foods you consume, because they often contain processed and refined salt that can lead to health related problems.

Have you experienced any benefits of Himalayan “Pink” Salt?

Have you ever had health related problems from refined salt (table salt)?

“Take every thought captive to keep your heart and mind.” 2 Corinthians 10:15

I have to admit that there have been moments when I have felt irritated and frustrated with the challenges of the day.

Sometimes, my response was to murmur and complain, instead of taking control of my thoughts, words, and actions.

I can say that this reaction has always been a result of me ignoring my own personal need to have a moment to myself.

We all have a personal responsibility to get clear and take back our authority, dominion, and power in life.

“We were created to dominate our day…not just tolerate it.” Kimberly Marie

Stay Connected to your Core Values and Beliefs:

What society values and believes changes, but God‘s word stays the same.

I find that I feel less confusion when I base my beliefs off of biblical principles. We make decisions faster when they are lined up with our core values.

No matter what is going on in the world, I can quickly know where I stand on any particular issue, which reduces stress for me.

There are so many messages, movements, and opinions today about everything. What was right 10 years ago is not right today. What was wrong 10 years ago is right today.

When you stick to your core values of right and wrong, it helps you maintain your identity. Your identity is connected to your purpose.

Stay Connected to Your Purpose:

We are all significant! God created each and every one of us on purpose… for a purpose. Knowing and understanding your purpose keeps you on track in life.

You will know what to dedicate your time, efforts, and energy to. We only have so much time and we want to spend it in the areas that we were designed to spend them in. This keeps us focused and headed in the right direction.

We are great when we do this!

I see people fighting battles they were never designed or equipped to fight and the results are not good. The fastest way to be stressed out is to try to be all things to everyone.

We have to stay in our own lanes and walk in our own purpose and callings to fulfill our unique destiny. Knowing your purpose, reduces a lot of unnecessary stress in life.

Stay Connected to Immediate Relationships in Your Life:

Today, many people are connected virtually, but their immediate and personal relationships are suffering.

Studies have shown that people don’t feel the same level of connection to their friends on social media, as they do when they interact face-to-face.

Studies have also shown that people who spend more time on social networking sites say that they feel less happy and more stressed out.

People often compare their lives to their friend’s lives on social media. These comparisons are not accurate because people tend to share an unbalanced (positive) viewpoint of their lives on social media.

Most people of a certain maturity level don’t share their personal dirty laundry to their virtual friends. We tend to only post the good times that we have.

Not the fight we had while getting ready to go on date night. Then we take couple pics once everything blows over to share with our friends. #perfectcouple

More people are reporting that they feel isolated and lonely. This can have long-term consequences on their health and mental well-being.

People who feel connected to others often live longer than those who feel isolated. We are social beings. Therefore, we have to give a higher priority to our personal relationships than we do to virtual ones.

This is a challenge for many of us today. For instance, I have a blog and need to be online to share information about it. However, I am beginning to set my mind to be present and intentional when my husband and kids want to talk to me.

I have this conversation in my head with myself like Okay Kim, put the smart phone down and give them eye contact or ask if we can discuss this when I can give them my undivided attention.

It’s not about quantity of time spent it’s about quality. The rewards will be great in the end, because the people who matter will know it and your relationships will be more healthy and peaceful with better communication and understanding, which results in less stress!

Take Home Message…

Stress happens to us all, but it is how we manage it that determines rather we will live an empowering life. Staying connected to God, ourselves, our core values, our purpose and the people who matter most will determine rather we live a life full of inner peace.

Naturally Get Rid Of Mucus On Your Own

Famed holistic healer Dr. Sebi, who recently passed away often said, “There is only one disease in the body and that is mucus.”

What is mucus?

“Mucus is nature’s Band-Aid” according to another holistic Dr. Llaila Africa. Water comes in to protect injured tissues. Mucus can occur anywhere in the body.

Usually, waste is excreted out of our bodies through our bowel movements, urination, sweat, and even menstruation.

When mucus drains out of our nose and lungs it is referred to as a cold. It is actually the body cleansing itself of toxic impurities and cellular waste.

How did the mucus get in our bodies in the first place?

Dairy: Pasteurized milk is denatured and many people cannot digest it, which leads to inflammation (mucous) in the body. The less whole the milk is the worse it is, because you are left with a milk pus product.

Refined Sugar/Table Salt/Junk Food: All of these non-foods leads to inflammation (mucous), dehydration, and constipation, which reduces elimination.

Constipation: Not passing stools 2-3 times a day is considered constipation. Mucus could be eliminated through your bowels, if they are moving properly.

Mental Stress & Environmental Toxins: Causes stress on our organs and tissues, which creates inflammation (mucus) to protect our organs and tissue from damage.

How to reduce mucus…

You can increase water intake to reduce constipation, so mucus can be eliminated out of the body.

Eat a whole foods diet including plenty of raw fruits and vegetables.

Manage stress.

Avoid or drastically eliminate junk food/dairy refined salt & sugar.

Exercising will help you excrete toxins through your skin, as well as help you manage stress.

Doctors recommended hours of 7-8 hours of sleep.
